What to automate first in a small business

Automation fails when it starts with the tool. Start with the task that repeats, costs time and never changes.

What to automate first in a small business

The best first automation is boring. It is the task someone does the same way every single day, with no judgement involved, and no tolerance for delay.

Lead response is usually the highest-return candidate. An enquiry that gets an accurate reply in two minutes converts far better than the same enquiry answered the next morning.

The second candidate is data entry between systems: form to CRM, CRM to invoicing, invoicing to reporting. Nobody is paid to copy fields between tabs, but somebody always is.

Keep a human in the loop wherever judgement, tone or money is involved. Automation that drafts and routes is safe. Automation that decides and sends without review is where trust gets lost.

Measure the hours returned, not the number of workflows built. One automation that saves six hours a week beats twenty that save five minutes each.
