Why your business doesn't show up on Google Maps

When someone nearby searches for what you do, Google shows three businesses on the map. Here is what decides which three, and why yours might be missing.

Why your business doesn't show up on Google Maps

Search for a plumber or a blinds fitter on your phone and the first thing you see is a map with three businesses on it. Most people tap one of those three and never scroll further. If your business is not one of them, you are invisible to the exact people trying to buy what you sell.

Those three spots are not bought. Google picks them based on three things: whether your business looks real and complete, how close you are to the person searching, and whether what you do matches what they typed. You cannot change where you are, but the other two are fully in your control.

The most common reason a business is missing is simple: its Google Business Profile is half empty or does not exist at all. No photos, the wrong category, no opening hours, nothing saying which services you actually offer. Google will not put a half-finished listing in front of its users.

The second reason is reviews. A competitor with forty recent reviews will outrank you if you have six from two years ago, even if your work is better. It is not fair, but it is how the system works. Reviews are also the part you can fix without spending anything.

Start with the profile itself. Fill in every section, pick the category that matches what you actually do, list the areas you serve, and add real photos of real work. Then ask every happy customer for a review and reply to each one. Our free checklist walks through the whole profile step by step.

Think of it the way we put it to businesses we review: a business with no proper Google presence is like a shop with no sign outside. People walk past it every day and never know it is there.
