How AI search is changing how people find a home services business
ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews now answer local searches directly. Here's what that means if you install blinds, shutters, or awnings for a living.
When someone searches "best shutters company near me" today, a growing share of them see an AI-generated answer sitting above the normal search results, or they skip Google entirely and ask ChatGPT the same question. Either way, they often get a short list of two or three businesses and never click through to compare ten websites the way search used to work.
This changes what actually matters. Traditional SEO still counts, but AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's own AI Overviews build their answers primarily from your Google Business Profile, structured data on your website, and how consistent your business details are across the web, not just how well a single page is written.
The single most important fix is consistency. Your business name, address, and phone number need to match exactly, character for character, across your website, your Google Business Profile, and every directory you're listed on, including ones you may have forgotten about. AI systems treat inconsistency as a trust signal working against you, not a minor typo.
The second fix is specificity. A review that says "great service" tells an AI system nothing useful. A review that says "fitted our plantation shutters in three days, tidy work" gives it something concrete to cite. The same goes for your own website copy: naming the specific services, areas, and details you cover helps an AI system describe your business accurately when it's deciding who to recommend.
Freshness matters more than most home services businesses expect. A Google Business Profile that hasn't been touched in months signals a business that might not be reliably active, which works against you when an AI system is choosing between you and a competitor who posts updates and photos regularly.
None of this replaces having an actual website that converts once someone does click through, since AI recommendations still often include a link. But for a home services business, this is genuinely one of the few areas right now where being early counts for more than being big, since most local competitors haven't touched any of it yet.
