Local SEO for home services businesses: the settings that actually matter
Most home services businesses compete on the map, not the main search results. Here is what actually moves your position in the local pack.
For most awnings, blinds, shutters, and interiors businesses, the map pack matters more than the ten blue links underneath it. Someone searching "shutter installer near me" is looking at three pinned businesses on a map before they look anywhere else. If you're not one of the three, the rest of the page barely matters.
The single biggest factor most home services businesses get wrong is category selection on their Google Business Profile. A shutters business listed only under "Home improvement" is competing against every trade in the area. Listed correctly under the specific service category, the competition narrows to businesses that actually do the same job.
Consistency across your name, address and phone number matters more than most businesses realise. If your website says one phone number and an old directory listing shows another, that inconsistency actively works against you in local rankings, since it signals to Google that the listing might not be reliable.
Reviews are the other major factor, but not just the star rating. Reviews that mention the specific service and the area ("fitted our plantation shutters in Sheffield") carry more local relevance signal than a generic five-star rating with no detail. Ask happy customers to mention what you did and where, rather than just asking for a rating.
Photos matter more than most trade businesses use them. Real job photos, uploaded regularly to your Google Business Profile rather than left static for years, are one of the simplest signals of an active, real business rather than an abandoned listing.
None of this replaces a website that converts once someone clicks through. Local SEO gets you found. What happens on the page after that is a separate problem, and usually the bigger one.
