How long does SEO actually take for a home services business?

For most home services businesses starting from a reasonably healthy website, expect the first measurable movement, more impressions, better map pack visibility, within 8 to 12 weeks. Expect a meaningful increase in actual enquiries and booked jobs to take closer to 4 to 6 months. Anyone promising results faster than that is either talking about paid ads, not SEO, or not being straight with you.

The first few weeks are mostly invisible work: fixing technical issues, correcting Google Business Profile details, and making sure the site is actually structured in a way Google and AI search tools can read properly. None of that shows up as a ranking change immediately, but skipping it means nothing built afterward stands on solid ground.

The next phase is where local pack position and organic impressions start moving, usually somewhere in that 8 to 12 week window, assuming consistent work rather than a one-off audit. This is often the point where a business owner starts checking rankings daily and getting anxious that it's not working fast enough. It's normal for this phase to feel slow.

Enquiries and booked jobs typically lag behind ranking improvements by another few weeks to a couple of months, since it takes time for the improved visibility to actually reach enough of the right searches and for word to spread through reviews and repeat business.

The honest reason this can't be rushed is that Google, and increasingly AI search tools, are deliberately slow to trust a business that suddenly looks different. A sudden spike in activity or rankings without the review, content and consistency signals to back it up looks suspicious to the algorithms, not impressive. Steady, real improvement is what actually holds.

If an agency won't give you a timeline like this and instead promises fast, dramatic results, that's worth treating as a warning sign rather than good news.
